Six from IU School of Social Work honored at Women's Leadership Event

    March 28, 2008 - Six members of the Indiana University School of Social Work were honored during this year’s 2008 Women’s History Month Leadership Awards program.

     Assistant Professor Khadija Khaja was named the Outstanding Woman Faculty “Newcomer” Leader Award.

     Five others received certificates for being Outstanding Women Leader nominees.

    Associate Professor Lorraine Blackman was nominated for being an Outstanding Woman Faculty “Veteran” leader

     PhD student, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty and BSW student Emily Hickman were nominated as an Outstanding Female Student Leaders.

     Outstanding Women Staff Leader nominations went to Rachel Sipes, MSW Recorder and Student Services Assistant and to Katrina Patterson, the BSW administrative secretary and student services and BSW Recorder.

     During the awards program on Thursday, Karen Whitney, the IUPUI Vice-Chancellor for Student Life and Dean of Students congratulated the nominees and award winners. She reminded the audience that something is gained when women are “asked to sit at the table and something is lost when they are not.”

     Women are a key component of making IUPUI an even better university, she said. “We can’t do that without having a table of men and women working together.”
