Julia Crane grew up under the influence of a social worker so to speak. Her mother has a BSW degree after all.
“Growing up I received a background with social work,” Crane noted.
Crane got an associate degree in broadcasting and worked for several years in broadcasting as an assistant sales manager in Bedford. Next, she worked for a publishing firm, Author House, in Bloomington.
There, Crane found herself using a lot of social work skills and decided to return to her roots.
Crane realized working with families and children was what she really wanted to do and enrolled in Indiana University’s School of Social Work BSW program.
“I think IUPUI is great about working with non-traditional students,” Crane said of her decision to start a new career. What’s more, she has found her learning experience deeper than just showing up for class and listening to a lecture.
Her professors have all had experiences in different fields and share that information with students, giving valuable insight into the real world of being a social worker. Plus, the chance of working at social service agencies to fill the practicum requirements of her degree, gives her a chance to test out first hand what its like to work in a particular field.
Crane continues to be a firm believer that the skills social work students learn are valuable in whatever line of work a person may eventually move into.
