Save the day for IU School of Social Work Information Event
You are invited to our annual IU School of Social Work Grand Information Event which includes a “Meet the Faculty” session on Saturday, November 21st from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.
The schedule for the event in the Commons on the 4th floor of the Education/Social Work Building on the IUPUI campus is as follows:
·9:30 am – 11:00 Information Session about the MSW program: schedule tracks, career possibilities, curriculum, costs and admissions information. (You do not need to attend this session if you have already attended an Info Session with Susan Larimer already)
·11:00 – 11:30 Meet the Dean & MSW Program Director
·11:30 – 12:30 Meet several IUSSW Social Work faculty. They will speak as a part of a panel about the classes they teach here at IUSSW. There will be time for questions as well.
·12:30 – 1:00 Snacks, beverages and mingling. Talk with faculty and staff about the program.
Interested prospective students and guests are welcome, but an RSVP would be most appreciated for planning. RSVP with the number of guests by e-mail to Susan Larimer at slarimer@iupui.edu
MSW Application for 2010 Now Available
Interested in applying to the MSW Program?
The 2010 application is now available. Applications can be submitted at any time, although applicants at IUPUI should be mindful of the following deadlines for 2010:
January 15th: Deadline for ALL advanced standing applicants (those with a BSW in 2005 or later)
February 5th: Priority date for all other applicants. Applications submitted by this date will receive notification of admission status by March 31st, 2010
March 1st: Deadline for International applicants (those with a Bachelor's degree from a country other than the U.S.)
May 14th: Final deadline for all applicants, excluding those applying for advanced standing.
Deadlines for IUSB and IUN may be extended. Please see the website for those campuses for further details

The theme of this year's conference was Bridging Rights, Culture, and Justice: Social Work as a Change Agent.

Halloween Fun and Fundraiser
Oct. 29, 2009 - The School of Social Work staff and others donned costumes to have a little fun and celebrate Halloween on Thursday. The Halloween event offered some tasty treats and was a fundraiser to help a MSW student who lost everything in a recent house fire. Thursday's fun raised $460. Professor Emeritus Jerome "Jerry" Smith has died
Aug. 21, 2009 - Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Smith, 76, a long-time faculty member of the Indiana University School of Social Work and Professor Emeritus, has died.
Dr. Jerry Smith
A native of Chicago, Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago before coming to teach at the School of Social Work at IUPUI in 1975. Among his interests were adoption issues. He was the author of many publications on the subject, including "The Realities of Adoption." He passed away July 23.
BSW student Tracy Harvey wins award in national essay contest

Aug. 18, 2009 - An essay by Tracy Harvey, a Bachelor of Social Work student at IUPUI, has won an award in a national contest. Her work will be included along with other winners in a booklet that will be mailed to all of the social work department chairs throughout the country.
Harvey was notified by Pearson Education that her essay on "how you plan to touch the world as a social worker," is among five essays included as runner-up winners. "We were so impressed with your essasy on how you plan to touch our world by working with the youth of today that we decided to create a new category of runner-up winners," a spokesperson for the education publishing company told Harvey in a note about her award.
The company selected five winning essays and five runner-up essays from among nearly 300 entries. All the essays will be included in the booklet to be distributed to social work schools this fall.

June 3, 2009 - PhD student, Lalit Khandare was awarded a $1,500 International Enhancement Grant by the IU Office of the Vice President for International Affairs. Lalit will be using the award for his trip to Peru to participate in the HDCA (Human Development and Capability Association) Summer School on Capability and Multidimensional Poverty to be held Aug 27-Sept 8th, said Margaret Adamek, Professor and Director of the School of Social Work's PhD program. The 9-day training program focuses on the capability approach for conceptualizing and measuring multidimensional poverty and development. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the University of Pavia and the University of Oxford.

May 8, 2009 - Dr. Edward Sites, who devoted nearly 50 years of his career on child welfare practice, education and research, recently stopped by the School of Social Work to hear about the school's Child Welfare Education and Training Partnership.

Dr. Sites served as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work for 41 years before his retirement in 2006. During his stop in Indianapolis, Dr. Sites was briefed on Indiana's child welfare training partnership with the state by Patricia Howes, director of the partnership, and Associate Professor of Social Work Lisa McGuire. Dr. Sites is also a long-time acquaintance of School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner.

April 29, 2009 - Congratulations to Dr. Theresa Roberts of the School of Social Work for receiving the National Distinguished Service Award at the National Association of Black Social Workers' 41st Annual Conference in Louisville, Ky.
Dr. Roberts is a founder and charter member of the Central Indiana Chapter, which was founded in 1985, and has been a member of the national association since 1981.

March 31, 2009 - The name of the School of Social Work was heard over and over at the Indiana University Celebration of Distinguished Teaching dinner on March 27th as three faculty members were among those being recognized. Those receiving honors were Associate Professor Lisa McGuire, who recieved the Thomas Ehrlich Award for Service Learning; Dr. Gary Miller, vice president of operations for Riley Hospital for Children, who received the university's Distinguished Teaching Award for part-time faculty, and Associate Professor Carol Hostetter, who received the Frederick Lieber Memorial Award.

March 27, 2009 - How to draw attention to the issues facing workers? The IUPUI Bachelor of Social Work Student Association decided to camp out on the Quad outside of Taylor Hall for 48 hours to do just that. Tents went up on the quad at noon on Thursday as well as information tables. The event, which drew a number of speakers, continued until noon on Saturday.

March 19, 2009 - The School of Social Work Centennial Celebration Committee needs a logo to go along with its new slogan, A Century of Hope and Change and the School's alumni office will award a $50 gift certificate to the winner. March 9, 2009 - Dr.Khadija Khaja of the School of Social Work was among a small group of IUPUI faculty who presented their research at the Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) Community Showcase March 4th. Dr. Khaja prepared a poster board and answered questions about her research into the impact of 9/11 on the lives of Muslims in the United States, Argentina, Australia and Canada. Among other things, the study found Muslims still feel a lot of pain, grief and and grief related to the terrorists attack.

March 5, 2009 - Dr. Carol Hostetter is the 2009 recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
"In supporting your nomination, your colleagues cited a number of personal and professional attributes that make you an excellent choice for this award," IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz wrote in a letter notifying Dr. Hostetter of her award. "You are clearly one of the key contributors to the success of our School of Social Work," he noted.
This is the second major award Dr. Hostetter has received this year. Last month she received word she will receive Indiana University's Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award for teaching excellence.

March 4, 2009 - Dr. Irene Queiro-Tajalli joined a group of extraordinary women in accepting a 2009 Indiana Commission for Women Torchbearer Award. Feb. 23, 2009 - Mary Dormann Williamson, an adjunct faculty member at the School of Social Work and a social worker at the Senior Health Center at Methodist Hospital, has been awarded the 2008 President's Values Leadership Award.
In a letter recommending her for the award, School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner pointed out she is a "model field instructor, who is extremely dedicated to our students who are interning with her."
The award is given to a person demonstrates "extraordinary dedication to the Clarian mission and values both while they are at work and as they go about their daily lives in the community."

School of Social Work showcases its international reach at IUPUI's International Festival
Feb. 17, 2009 - The School of Social, which has assisted students with placements in at least 15 countries, participated in the 5th IUPUI International Festival on Tuesday at Taylor Hall. The school's booth, which was sandwiched in between the Herron School of Art and the Hip Hop Dance Crew, showed off its ability to send students to countries ranging from Chile, Argentina, Germany, to Romania and Kenya. Among those taking a turn answering questions about the School's international program was Dr. Irene Queiro-Tajalli, the Executive Director of Undergraduate Education and Interim Executive Director of the Labor Studies program.

Feb. 5, 2009 - Dr. Lisa McGuire, an Associate Professor in the Indiana University School of Social Work, has been selected to receive the Thomas Ehrlich Award for Service Learning.
"Congratualations on this well-deserved honor!," Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie wrote in a letter informing Dr. McGuire she has won the award.
"What a great week!," said the School's Dean Michael Patchner upon learning of the award. "I am extremely pleased to announce another major University (all 8 campuses) award being bestowed on one of our colleagues."
Earlier this week, Dr. Carol Hostetter, an Associate Professor in the School, learned she won the Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award for teaching excellence.
In his letter to Dr. McGuire, President McRobbie wrote, "It is because of faculty members like you, who have a clear vision of what education can and should be that Indiana University has acheived an international reputation as a center of academic excellence."
The Thomas Ehrlich Award is given to individuals who have "implemented service learning in a manner consistent with good practice, improve the course, reflected upon it, taken on leadership in their department, campus and/or discipline and had an impact on students and the community both in and out of the classroom."

Feb. 3, 2009 - Dr. Carol Hostetter, an associate professor in the Indiana University School of Social Work, has won the Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award for teaching excellence.
"It is because of faculty members like you, who have a clear vision of what education can and should be that Indiana University has achieved an international reputation as a center of academic excellence," IU President Michael A. McRobbie wrote in a letter to Dr. Hostetter announcing the award.
"You bring great credit to the whole university and it will be a special honor for me to present this award to you," the president said of an upcoming awards ceremony in March.

Nov. 21, 2008 - Social work anyone? Craig Campbell from the Indiana University School of Social Work stood ready for any inquiries at the International Festival held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The festival, which featured exhibits from more than 50 ethnic groups. It is the oldest pan-ethnic celebration and is hosted by the National Council of Indiana. Campbell was armed with information about the school and its placement of students around the world, not to mention the school's four-color pens for anyone who stopped by.

Sept. 11, 2008 - A Chinese official visiting the United States included a stop at IUPUI to seek out advice on what’s on the minds of Indiana and America voters about to choose a new President. Government report shows employment prospects for for social workers is favorable through 2016
Aug. 4, 2008 - Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of employed social workers is expected to increase from 595,000 in 2006 to 727,000 by 2016, the bureau's Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts.
The growing elderly population and the aging baby boom generation will result in rapid job growth among gerontology social workers, while mental health and substance abuse social workers will grow at a fast rate as well as more people are being placed into treatment programs instead of being sentenced to prison.

June 17, 2008 - Dr. Carmen Luca Sugawara was notified Tuesday she has been appointed a member of the CSWE’s Commission on Global Social Work Education.
The work of the commission is “far reaching in terms of setting an agenda for CSWE relative to Global Social Work Education as well as maintaining an interface with other organizations and their global initiatives, including the Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education,” according to a letter from the Council on Social Work Education's president, Dr. Ira Colby announcing the appointment.
Dr. Luca Sugawara, an assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work, was awarded the Frank Turner Prize by the publishers of International Social Work for an article on “Civil society’s role in promoting local development in countries in transition: A comparative study of the Philippines and Romania.” Jocelyn Hermoso was co-author of the article.

IU School of Social Work Dean Emeritus Sheldon Siegel receives community leadership award

April 24, 2008 - Dr. Sheldon Siegel, the Dean Emeritus of the IU School of Social Work, will receive the 2008 Community Leadership Award from the Indianapolis Senior Center on Friday. The award, which will be presented at the agency's Senior Prom, is given annually to people with a history of community service, particularly in the area of aging. Dr. Siegel served as dean from 1984-1994 and later returned as interim dean in July of 1999, serving in the capacity until Dean Michael Patchner was hired in 2000.

Grant to provide incentive in field of gerontology

Jan. 24, 2008 – The Indiana University School of Social Work has been awarded a $75,000 Practicum Partnership Program grant that will serve as an incentive to attract graduate students to the field of geriatrics and gerontology.
